Round, teardrop or diamond: padel racket shapes explained

The shape of the head decides where the sweet spot sits and how the weight is spread. It is the first thing to get right when you choose a racket.

The dot shows where the balance point typically sits for each shape.

Round

A round head puts the sweet spot in the middle of the face and usually keeps the weight closer to the handle. That gives the biggest margin for off-centre hits and the most control.

Round rackets suit beginners, players who mostly defend from the back of the court, and anyone who wants an easy racket to manoeuvre at the net.

Teardrop

A teardrop (also sold as hybrid or drop) narrows towards the handle and moves the sweet spot slightly up the face. Balance is usually medium.

It is the all-round shape: more punch on overheads than a round racket, but still forgiving enough for players who are improving. Many intermediate players settle here.

Diamond

A diamond head is widest near the tip, which pushes both the sweet spot and the weight upwards. That high balance turns into power on smashes and vibora shots.

The trade-off is a smaller, higher sweet spot and more strain on the wrist and elbow. Diamond rackets are built for advanced attacking players with solid technique.

Shape is not the whole story

Two rackets with the same shape can play very differently. Balance, core hardness, face material and weight all change the feel, which is why our racket pages show every spec side by side.

Questions

Which padel racket shape is best for beginners?

Round. The large central sweet spot and low balance forgive off-centre hits and are easy to control while you learn the strokes.

Is a diamond racket more powerful?

Usually yes for overheads, because the weight sits higher in the head. Power from a diamond racket depends on technique, though, and a hard core can feel less lively on slow balls.

What is a hybrid padel racket?

Brands use hybrid for heads between round and diamond, which is what most people call teardrop. We list those as teardrop.
